Military gear over the years has changed dramatically, but many things still stay the same. You could probably say this about everything that has stood the test of time. For instance, travel has gotten much more efficient, but at the end of the day it still consists of a person getting from point A to point B. Many things about military gear are still exactly the same. For example, soldiers still fight with deadly weapons and wear protective gear. Also soldiers still undergo rigorous training and are still viewed as heros by the ones they are called on to defend.

The many differences come in the form of the kind of gear and the kind of training that soldiers receive. Warriors now have access to weapons that can crush thousands of enemies in one blow. This has called for an advancement of training in some areas and less training in others. Firing a rifle takes much less skill than fending and stabbing with a medieval weapon. Currently, basic training only makes warriors learn to shoot with their rifles for one to two weeks which compared to ancient soldiers weapon training is not very long. Also todays soldiers do not need to be as physically fit as the soldiers that needed to wield swords after marches that may have lasted months.

The protective gear of todays soldiers does consist of something to protect the body, and something to protect the head, but the similarities end there. For instance a set of roman armor was great for deflecting swords, but it would not hold up under the heavy shrapnel that comes at today’s warriors. The ancient armors are best reserved for display purposes rather than combat. Flack jackets and kevlar helmets may not stop missiles, but they will protect the average soldier much better than the heavier weaker armor of our past.

Soldier gear has gotten much better, but it still has a long way to go before it ever stops being improved on. As long as there are armies willing to engage each other in battle, there will be somebody out there trying to improve their soldiers gear.
